For the last 13 years, Aunty Anne has been Co-Chair of the National NAIDOC Committee and is therefore responsible for the brilliant themes we have seen since 2006, including this year’s. When asked what her inspiration for the theme was, Aunty Anne speaks about the strength of her mother, grandmother, Aunties, daughters, granddaughters and all the women she has been able to look up to in her life.
Aunny Anne has also been an activist campaigning for the advancement of our peoples’ rights for decades now. With a chuckle, she fondly remembers the stunts her brothers and others pulled off in the 70s, including “relocating” flags from prominent public places, and in the 90s she led the campaign for Aden Ridgeway to become a Senator in the Australian Parliament.
Last year, Aunty Anne became Dr Aunty Anne as she received an Honorary Doctorate from the World Indigenous Nations University. This is testament to the contributions she has made in the higher education sector in Australia. A staunch believer in the power of education, Aunty Anne has held positions in universities and other agencies supporting students and making our lives just that little bit easier.
Dr Aunty Anne Martin is an inspiration to all her students and we are truly grateful for all the work she does.
Thank you for all that you do Aunty Anne. Because of you, we can!
